Approach Scramble

A one-day bouldering scramble at Approach, followed by an evening party.

Pick a heat, warm-up 30 minutes early, climb as much of the fresh set as you can, and score your five hardest sends, with attempts counting.

Door prizes to all competitors and party attendees.

The whole gym is reset for the comp: around 35 new boulders from V0 to V10. You track your attempts on an online scoresheet as you go.

Questions & Answers

What is a scramble?

A competition where everyone climbs at the same time, during their heat, on whatever boulders they choose. Your score comes from your five highest point climbs.

How does scoring work?

Harder boulders are worth more points, and each attempt takes off some points. A harder climb will always beat an easier one, no matter how many attempts. You log your attempts and sends yourself on the online scoresheet on your phone.

Which heat should I pick?

Whichever time suits you. All three heats climb the same boulders with the same warm-up. Heats are capped, so register early for the time you want.

Can I arrive late to my heat?

Yes, but the heat ends at the same time for everyone, so you will have less time to climb. Warm-up starts 30 minutes before the heat.

Are spectators allowed?

No. During the heats the gym is open to registered climbers only.

Which category should I enter?

Open is for the most competitive climbers and is the only category with cash prizes and a podium. Casual is for people who want to climb the comp set with friends and enter the draw. Intermediate sits between the two. Categories are about the kind of climber you are, not a grade range, so pick the one that sounds like you.

How do I win a prize?

All competitors and party attendees are eligible for door prize draws, which will be drawn during your heat and the party. Open podiums take the cash prizes.

Do I need to have competed before?

No. Many people in Intermediate and Casual are climbing their first comp. If you can climb at Approach on a normal day, you can climb Walk the Rock.

Is the entry fee also my day pass?

Yes. Registration covers your climbing for the day and the party in the evening. You still need a signed waiver on file.

What happens at the party?

From 7 PM the left side of the gym becomes a set of challenge boulders: speed traverses, balance problems, partner challenges, and a few things that are not quite climbing. Podiums and the remaining prize draws happen during the evening.

How do I get the shirt?

Add it to your registration for $22.50, or buy it on its own for $35 through the portal store. The design is by Kari Miedema of Kari Manami Designs. Shirts are picked up at the desk on the day.
