New to Climbing?

Entering a bouldering gym can seem intimidating, especially if you’ve never climbed before. Bouldering is climbing without ropes — the walls are short enough that you just fall onto thick padding — and you don’t need a partner, a harness, or any prior experience. Most people who come in for the first time have no idea what they’re doing, which is fine, because neither did anyone else at some point.

When you arrive, our staff will show you around, explain how things work, and teach you how to fall safely before you get on the wall. Rental shoes and chalk are available at the desk, so there’s nothing to bring.

If you want some structure to get started, our Introduction to Bouldering course covers movement and technique in a single session. To get the most value out of your first fists, we offer an Introduction to Bouldering membership — two weeks of unlimited climbing, free rentals, and one free Intro course — which gives you plenty of quality time on the wall to get hooked.

Questions & Answers

Do I need to book ahead?

No. You can just show up whenever we are open. It is a good idea to sign the waiver online before your first visit to save time when you arrive.

Do I need to bring anything?

No. We have rental shoes and chalk available at the desk. You should wear loose, athletic clothes.

Do I need to be strong or fit?

No. You will build the specific muscles you need by climbing. Beginner climbs focus less on strength and more on movement, footwork, and getting comfortable.

How long should I plan for?

A first visit usually lasts between one and two hours. You may tire out faster than you expect and need to take breaks between climbs. For the best value, we offer a One Week Membership or an Introduction to Bouldering Membership that both include free rentals.

Are there climbs for complete beginners?

Yes. All of our routes are graded by difficulty. There is a full range of levels, so you can start with the easiest, beginner climbs. Staff will point those out.

How do I get better?

Show up. The best way to improve is to climb often, and watch how other people move on the wall. Your muscles and skin may take a few consistent visits to get used to bouldering. Our staff, our courses, and the wider climbing community are all good resources to help you improve.

Is a bouldering gym social?

Yes. Since you spend a lot of time resting between climbs, and since climbing requires so much technique, it is easy to start a conversation with the people around you. The best way to meet others is to talk about the climbs you are working on. If you see someone trying the same boulder problem as you, you can ask them for tips or, what climbers call, “beta.” Most climbers enjoy sharing advice when asked.

Do I have to be social?

No. Many people come here just to focus on their own workout. It is common to climb without talking to anyone. Bouldering is ultimately a solo sport; it is a challenge between you and the wall.
